Bio and Election 2013
April 24, 2013
Board Candidate Donna Atkins's additional background information.
I have worked in banks in Kansas City, Mo and Reno, Nev. After moving to Lincoln, NE, I worked at Kresge's in several departments and ended up as manager of the lunch counter for several years. In addition, I have worked in a school lunch room, in a shoe store and then at Metro Mail compiling city directories until I retired in 1991.
Since moving to Forbes Park I have done a lot of volunteer work, was a member and Secretary of Friends of the Fort, a member of Costilla County Chamber of Commerce, and served as a member of the FPLOA Board or Secretary for several years. I have been on the FPLOA Communications Committee in the Park for several years and am Secretary of the Neighborhood Activity Group. My husband and I were part of the group that developed it.
Now, most of my time is involved with the health and welfare of our Senior Citizens by serving on the following:
Advisory and Policy Board for the South-Central Colorado Seniors
Nutrition Committee for the 9 meal sites in the San Luis Valley
Board for Retired Senior Volunteers Program
Secretary for the San Luis Valley Crimestoppers
Serve meals to senior citizens at the Blanca-Fort Garland Community Center weekly
These activities are a very good way to meet and fellowship with many area seniors and associated workers. I am a member of United for Christ Community Church and love living in Forbes Park and hope to be here for many more years.
Recent FPLOA Board Actions
The FPLOA Board majority has taken two actions which places the campaign to elect Marie Mercier and Donna Atkins at a disadvantage from another declared candidate, so even more effort will be needed. Our objective is to restore a climate where all property owners of all situations (campers, investors, those building and homeowners) can feel a love of Forbes Park and its environs. In view of this we certainly are not going to wage a negative campaign, but we do feel that the playing field should be at least level.
The two actions by the Board were to use the FPLOA official communications medium to give one announced Board candidate both an endorsement for re-election and a private forum for his campaign. Unless granted equal time, the Donna and Marie campaign will have to use private funds to post our platform, whereas the other candidate got free access.
We have sent a communication to the FPLOA Board, Chairman/President, and FPLOA secretary requesting the same access to the Forbes Park News and Updates that was given to the other candidate. The memorandum is also a letter of demand that the aforementioned parties recuse themselves from supervision of the 2013 election due to demonstrated lack of impartiality. All aforementioned parties are also members of the FPLOA Board and should not supervise an election.
As our policy is to use provable data to back up our statements, we submit the following verifiable evidence of the Boards actions:
FIRST: The Board and President used the “official” Forbes Park News and Updates (N&U) on March 18, 2013 to endorse Skip Bunn with the published statement, “The Board values the services and contributions made by Skip and desires that he be re-elected.” Marie's husband was told by Laura Barth that this was not an endorsement but a response to attacks on Skip Bunn. Nevertheless, however one justifies the above statement, it is obvious that the landowners receiving this communications will read it as an endorsement. A request for a retraction was denied with the statement by Laura Barth that “our lawyer said we should do this”.
SECOND: Board candidate Skip Bunn was allowed to use the N&U to make statements that included his achievements as a Board member in a campaign like style (N&U April 17, 2013). Again allowing a particular candidate to campaign free.
Since we do not have the same comprehensive list of email addresses as the Board does, we will have to use whatever street address mailing list we can garner by whatever means to get the word out. This will be considerably more expensive than the free N&U. It is therefore imperative that this blog be distributed as far and wide as possible by our supporters..
